cute things falling asleep
Yes, I did steal the title, but maybe it’s OK if I link to the cute things site. Anyway, could there be a better title for this photo? I thought not.
This picture was taken some 12 years ago. The cute thing on the right will be a teenager, Sunday at 2:37 p.m. To celebrate, we are taking her on a special vacation. To that place down South where giant mice run the place and people deliberately seek out experiences that elicit terror. (What in the name of all that’s sane are we thinking?) It will be her first time there, and her first time on an airplane.
I hope to fully participate in this extravaganza, but just in case my illness doesn’t permit, I believe our accommodations will be pleasant enough that I can just hang out and read and still have enjoyment aplenty. I owe a huge thank you to charlote, who is a most excellent consultant on all matters related to the happiest place on earth. The planning would have done me in, had I not had the benefit of her considerable knowledge and experience.
I’ll be back in about a week. I’d surely appreciate your prayers for safe travel, a body that cooperates with the program, kind strangers and the like.

O'Dwyer's comic talents will be tapped in the cross-dressing role of Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. Dorfman will take time away from his busy film/television/theater career to perform David Sedaris' offbeat holiday monologue, The Santaland Diaries. And Butler will get an opportunity she has been craving - the chance to explore a serious role in a nonmusical - when she depicts the title character in August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
"We wanted to build the season around several of our associate artists who are loved by our audience," says Irene Lewis, Center Stage's artistic director. The 2009-2010 season is scheduled to be officially announced Monday.
Organization officials announced in March that they are trying out a new structure for the troupe's 48th season. Instead of mounting six evening-length plays, as Center Stage has done in the past, this year that number will be reduced to four, which will be mounted in the 541-seat Pearlstone Theatre.
top hat auto wash
Not sure how long this car wash has been around, but it's neon sign wasn't installed yesterday. Top Hat Auto Wash was recently one of the locations Hollywood used to shoot scenes for "Semi-Pro" starring Will Ferrel and Woody Harrelson. It's about a basketball team in Flint named the "Tropics". Due out in 2008. We'll see what hits the cutting room floor.

What is soy?
According to the National Institutes of Health, soy is a plant in the pea family that has been common in Asian diets for thousands of years. It is found in modern American diets as a food or food additive. It is a good source of protein. People use soy products to prevent or treat a variety of health conditions, including high cholesterol levels, menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, osteoporosis, memory problems, high blood pressure, breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Certified nutritionist Michelle Cave practices what she teaches. The Redding resident tells others about the importance of serving nutritious food, and that's what she does for her family.
Soy products are a part of her family's well-rounded diet.
"I've been cooking with soy for the last 10 to 12 years," Cave said. "It's a very nutritious food."
That's because it is an excellent source of protein and has other health advantages. Based on dozens of clinical studies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said that soy may reduce the risk of heart disease.
But researchers are concerned that isoflavones, a weak form of estrogen, could produce detrimental side effects in some populations if consumed too frequently, so Cave said she serves tofu in moderation.
Christine Lewis of the Center for Food Safety said, "Soy by itself is not a magic food, but rather it is an example of the different kinds of foods that together in a complete diet can have a positive effect on health."
Cave uses soy in a variety of forms when cooking for her family.
"Probably the most popular form is tofu," Cave said. "I use firm tofu in stir-fries and sautes and I blend soft tofu in smoothies and puddings."
Tofu is refrigerated and, depending on the store, may be found in the organic section, displayed with alternative meats or sometimes with specialty products, such as Asian wonton wrappers.
Wherever the product is found, Cave said that it's important to check the date on the package. "Tofu doesn't have a long shelf life," she said.
One of the more popular uses for tofu in the Cave household is in place of eggs in a Mexican or curry scramble.
"This is a great way to fit it in," Cave said, noting that it's even popular with her two elementary school-age children.
Soy is bland, so Cave said it's important to add flavor. That's why tofu is often used in stir-fry dishes because it absorbs the spices and other sauces. Tofu is often offered as an alternative to pork and chicken at Asian restaurants.
Tempeh is a teriyaki tofu that has already been grilled. Cave purchases it already prepared. "It's easy to cut up and put in salads," Cave said.
She is also a fan of soy chorizo, an alternative to the traditional sausage. She uses it in tacos and scrambles it with eggs. Soy is used in a number of meat alternatives, including hot dogs and veggie burgers.
Cave's daughter is somewhat lactose intolerant, so soy milk is rotated with rice, oat and rye milks in their household.
In addition to main dishes, Cave uses soy products as snacks. Edamame is created when the soy bean is parboiled in salted water. The seeds are squeezed directly into the mouth. Soy nuts are another fun treat. "It's a great way to eat them," Cave said.
She also purchases soy crisps, which are similar to rice cakes, and tucks them in her children's lunchboxes.

There were two themes occurring early and often in today's Game 1 matchup between the Celtics and Bulls: Derrick Rose was hot, Ray Allen was not. Both of those themes proved to be deciding factors that allowed Chicago to sneak out of TD Banknorth Garden with a 105-103 overtime win and a 1-0 lead in the series.
Rose scored a career-high 36 points and dished out 11 assists in a game he dominated from start to finish. Rose tied Kareem Abdul Jabbar's performance in 1970 for the highest point total by a rookie in their first playoff game. The rookie point guard was a handful for the Celtics defense with his driving, jump shot and perfect 12-of-12 shooting from the free throw line.
Is this kid really a rookie?
"I just wanted to come out aggressive. I talked to BJ (Armstrong) and he said to just play the way you always play for the first 5 minutes," Rose said. "It's hard playing in the Garden especially with the fans and I just played aggressive and the team followed me"
While Rose had his way with the Celtics' defense, Allen had the worst full-game performance of his season. He finished with four points on a rough 1-of-12 shooting. On February 11 in New Orleans, he recorded one point in 19 minutes. Allen's one and only field goal came on a floater in the lane with 3:01 remaining in the second quarter.
Boston fans would have been more than happy if Allen had managed to end overtime with two field goals. As the Celtics ran their final possession with 3.7 seconds remaining in OT, Paul Pierce drove and found Allen a few feet inside the three-point line in the corner of the court.
There was a feeling that Allen, at some point, would snap out of his shooting slump and hit a big shot down the stretch, just as he did on April 1 when he lifted the C's to a double-overtime win over Charlotte. But as he took Pierce's pass, rose and fired at the basket, it wasn't meant to be and for the 11th time of the afternoon his shot rattled out of the basket and Boston had let one slip through their hands.
"I thought I never had a good rhythm. I had a couple early that went in and out, but after that they were kind of spotty," said Allen.
The Bulls were provided a second chance when Paul Pierce failed to give the Celtics a lead with 2.6 seconds remaining in regulation. After Rose hit two free throws with 9.7 seconds on the clock to give Chicago a 97-96 lead, Pierce came down court and drew a shooting foul on Joakim Noah.
Pierce went to the line and calmly sank the first free throw, tying the game at 97. His second shot, however, didn't want to fall and bounced out, effectively sending the game to overtime. If the free throw had dropped, it's more than likely that the Celtics would currently be in a role reversal with this series.
"Sometimes you've got to get a break, and we got a break," Vinny Del Negro said of the missed free throw. "You never want to see that for any player but it's part of the game. I was glad the way we kind of hung together there in the overtime and made plays."
As Pierce took his free throws, Chicago had no timeouts. That means the Bulls would have needed to either advance the ball the length of the court and score in 2.6 seconds, or make a desperation half court shot to win.
While Rose was having a record night at one end of the court, Rajon Rondo was doing his best to duplicate that performance at the other. He flirted with a triple-double and was the only Boston player to play well from start to finish. He scored 12 points in the first quarter and finished the night with 29 to go along with his nine rebounds and seven assists.
Chicago has now taken away home court advantage from the Celtics and has seemingly shocked the NBA basketball world. Not many expected the Bulls to come into Boston and steal a win, let alone in Game 1.
As admitted by Doc Rivers, Rose had an amazing game and led the Bulls to victory. But at the same time, he believes that this series still lies in his team's hands, not the other way around.
"Well, the playoffs have begun, and we're down 0-1. Put our self in a hole," he said. "And honestly, guys, I thought we did it as much as they did it. But give them credit. (Derrick) Rose tonight was absolutely fantastic."
If Boston can figure out a way to limit Chicago's effectiveness on the fast break, have Allen and Pierce, who finished with 23 points, play consistently from start to finish, there is no doubt that the Celtics will make up for their misstep today.
If the transition defense continues to struggle and ball movement continues to lack, the defending champs will have a tougher fight than anticipated against the young and inexperienced Bulls.
Rivers summed it up nicely by saying, "We can't show up and think because we're the Boston Celtics that everything is going to be good."
